Art × Technology Resonate with You 「科技始終來自於人性」。 There’s a common saying in Taiwan that goes: “technology always comes from human nature.” When it comes to the relationship between technology and art, “human nature” is the key that connects the two. Suppose the artist fails to consider human-oriented factors and lacks the desire to interact with people. In that case, the work won’t resonate with the audience, despite as many technologies as can be applied. National Taichung Theater’s 2022 Taiwan International Festival of Arts aims to marry aesthetics with science, presenting programs coating with technological outfits. However, when delving into their creative origins, one will definitely realize these works are fruits of human emotion representing aesthetical pursuit. 2022 NTT-TIFA features 10 sensational programs. Living Room, FreeSteps AR Yours 2.0 , and Acqua Alta integrate AR, VR, and AI computing that woven the reality and the virtual worlds. Chronicle of Light Year: Taipei-Copenhagen and The Ultimate Battle employ 4D BOX AI spatial mapping technology. See , a creation by Dance Lab, explores the relationship between space and visual images. Other programs explore sonic effects. Dear John is a family immersive sound lab. After two years of residency, NTT Artist in Residence CHENG I-lly offers Qualia, an electronica and body- movement theater performance. CHENG Tsung-lung’s Send in a Cloud is a new creation for Cloud Gate, collaborating with the four-time Grammy-winning sound designer Marcelo Anez. Finally, Robert Lepage, widely praised as the “da Vinci of our time,” will visit National Taichung Theater for the first time with his long-awaited, latest work, Courville , in which he serves as a writer-director-actor. The application of technology has created countless unprecedented visual images for performing art. Whereas in the field of sound art, in addition to the above-mentioned exploratory programs, many theaters and dance companies have recently joined forces with “atypical sound designers” with very different backgrounds. The outcomes internalized music and sound in the overall theatrical experience, bringing further original imagination and delights to the works and providing direct emotional communication with people’s souls. In this issue’s Arts Up to Speed, we will tell more stories about these slashie sound designers.
