How long has it been since your last summer vacation? In addition to school faculty and administration, there is another group of professionals whose year begins in September—for musicians of the many orchestras in the world, their “music seasons” start off after the summer vacation ends; they then begin a series of rehearsals, concerts and all sorts of outreach events. This is precisely the case at the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO).
This September, the NSO will launch an exciting 2019/20 Season, which will also be the final music season for incumbent Music Director LÜ Shao-chia. As a record-holding “mountaineer” of the worthiest peaks in classical music (what’s with the epithet), NSO will again surmount a new height. In the Season Opening Concert on September 20, the orchestra will present Das klagende Lied , an early show of Gustav Mahler’s talents composed at the age of 18. It will be a majestic launch of the season brought by the combined forces of a large-scale orchestra, mixed choirs, several solo vocalists and an astonishing backstage team. During the season we will celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birth anniversary. The NSO will present the “Everest-level” Missa solemnis and the final installation, Götterdämmerung, of the composer’s Der Ring des Nibelungen. Through music we shall transcend geography, time and space in search of self- identification and fulfillment.
If music seasons always last from September to the following June, what do musicians work on during summer vacations? Join us in this issue’s “Arts Up to Speed,” where we will uncover the secrets of musician’s Julys and Augusts.
