How do you measure a lengthy period of two decades? Twice as long as the making of the Harry Potter movie series, a couple of presidential elections or a young kid becomes a grown-up? During this time of uncertainty, when we ponder over our next step, Legend Lin Dance Theatre and its artistic director Lin Lee-chen will take their classic repertoire Hymne aux Fleurs qui Passent back to theaters, once again presenting the reflection on nature.
Do you remember the last time you fix your eyes on the stage, only to find that more than an hour has slipped away when your mind’s back in reality? Since the 2000 premier of Hymne aux Fleurs qui Passent, the enormous energy of relaxed movements and tranquility has struck countless audiences around the world. With four seasons as motif and flora and fauna as metaphors, Hymne aux Fleurs qui Passent is a ritual for mother nature. Dancers perform in a gentle and unrushed manner. Audiences hold their breath, nearly forgetting their being and location, experiencing the engaging, dreaming-like progression of seasons. Lin and dancers have wholeheartedly venerated nature and adopted a humble attitude towards the unpredictability of time. This autumn, we welcome the grand comeback of this poetic work with fascinating power.
This October, the annual Taiwan LGBT Pride will once again bring the spirit of diversity and union back into Taipei’s street. Just as we encounter different people in everyday life, we see roles from all gender spectrum and their stories of hesitation, transformation, or how they take pride in themselves. In this issue’s Art Up to Speed, we provide scoops of stories that appeared on stage about those who struggle to face their true color as well as those who walk in the sun and embrace their own uniqueness.
