"National Theater and Concert Hall," "Summer," and "Jazz" are three individual keywords.
However, every year during summer vacation, when they combined into one and added a "#" to
the beginning of it, no doubt it became the top trending hashtag among jazz lovers in Taiwan.
Since 2003, the NTCH has held the Summer Jazz festival, which breaks through the performance
framework and casts aside the audience's preconceived impression. By embracing jazz music
to be performed in national-level venues, NTCH shares the jiggle and wiggle of enchanting and
elegant live jazz concerts with all the audiences.
This year, the Summer Jazz reached its twenty-year milestone. Curated by four Taiwanese
musicians, the 2022 Summer Jazz features four programs — "Summer Jazz Project," "Summer
Jazz Outdoor Party," "Jazz on Track!" and "Jazz in da House" — that looks into the past, present,
and future of jazz music in Taiwan. It also provides four large-scale events, including relaxed
performances, documentary screenings, exhibitions, and the jazz camp, bringing top-notch
Taiwanese jazz musicians together intergenerationally and interdisciplinarily to showcase their
talents and enjoy the fullest. The 2022 Summer Jazz will present how jazz took root, sprouted,
and thrived in Taiwan with rich aspects. It has become an indispensable music genre in Taiwan,
carrying on to expand infinite acoustic possibilities.
No matter what form of performance it is, whether a highly improvised jazz concert or a
musical with a continuous surge in audiences in recent years, the intermission, long or short, is
a period for the audiences to grab a drink and catch up with friends and for the performers to
take a break that ensures a more exciting second half. In this issue's Arts Up to Speed, we will
investigate "intermission" from the perspective of semantics, history, and scenario to restore its
sense of existence.
