An Audio Journey for Your Mind: the NSO’s 2022/23 season
French writer Victor Hugo once said: “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which
it is impossible to be silent.” The charm of music lies in how it leads us through time and space
and various cultures, guiding our imaginations to soar, precisely what the National Symphony
Orchestra brings to the audience every season.
For the new season, Jun Märkl, the music director, continues to develop and extend the
versatility of programs with three principal directions: “theme,” “region,” and “composer.” The
new theme will pivot around “Natural Scenery.” With the classics of Beethoven, Debussy, and
Toshio Hosokawa, the NSO will depict breathtaking soundscapes and introduce the beauty
of nature to the audience with intangible notes. This season will also continue to explore the
richness of French music, featuring Berlioz’s large-scale dramatic symphony Romeo and Juliet
with opening cuts and focusing on two of the French masters——Debussy and Ravel.
This year marks the 175th anniversary of the death of German composer Mendelssohn; the new
season will thus include his most celebrated concertos and symphonies. In addition, we will go
into Russian composer Rachmaninov’s musical life with his works for piano and orchestra. The
new music season also offers the future of Taiwan’s music to everyone with the “One-minute
Symphony Project,” a platform for Taiwan’s outstanding young composers to have their works
performed by the NSO.
If we say that music touches people nonphysically, then architecture amazes people with
concrete existence. In this issue of Arts Up to Speed, we’ll look back on some of the inspiring
theaters designed by the most famous architects, which combine architectural appreciation with
the experience of attending a performance.
