Let Out Heart Pound with Dance Steps
Dance is organic. Every movement of the dancers draws the audience's emotions as if their
heartbeats are resonating with the performance on stage. Such a unique experience must be
genuinely felt in person. Since the beginning of 2023, dance troupes and choreographers from
around the world have been making their debut in Taiwan. With the diverse cultural backgrounds
and creative perspectives, they lead us to explore the various possibilities and contours of modern
dance.
This May, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani from Sweden will present a double bill for the NTT
Arts NOVA at the National Taichung Theater, bringing a refreshing experience to your senses.
As one of Europe's most avant-garde dance troupes affiliated with the Gothenburg Opera
House, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani assembles 38 young dancers from 20 countries and is
committed to collaborating with top avant-garde choreographers to create boundary-breaking
works. The double bill includes Skid by Belgian choreographer Damien Jalet and SAABA by Israeli
choreographer Sharon Eyal. In the former, 17 dancers will challenge gravity and dance on a
34-degree slope leading to the orchestra pit, like Sisyphus from Greek mythology, futilely resisting
their fate. With its costumes designed by Dior's Creative Director, the latter hypnotizes the audience
with eerie movements and takes them into another hallucinatory parallel world, exploring the
fragility, anxiety, and beauty of life hidden beneath the flesh.
If dance directly expresses through the body, then "puppetry" is the opposite, hiding the body
and having the puppets perform on stage, guiding the audience into an entirely imaginary world.
Recently, there has been an increasing trend of integrating puppetry with contemporary theater or
other traditional arts. In this issue's Arts Up to Speed, let's jump on the bandwagon and learn about
puppetry!
